It seems that everyday there are more and more chicken coops for sale online. But before you decide to buy there are certain things to keep in mind in order to help you make the right purchase. Below I'll offer some basic tips on what to look for when buying a chicken coop.
Must Be of Sturdy and Durable Construction - The chicken coop you buy or build ideally should be made of either pressure treated or tanalised hardwood so it will be able to withstand everything Mother Nature throws at it. These types of coop will need very little maintenance over time and should last for about 20 -25 years, so they're worth investing in.
If you don't want to fork out for this, then buy or make one from treated wood and top up with preservative each and every year. It goes without saying but I'll say it anyway...make sure the preservative you use is non-toxic to chickens.
The Right Roof - The roof of your chicken hen house needs to be water-proof, obviously.
Make sure no nails have pierced the waterproof membrane during construction and damp is not welcome in a chicken coop. Ideally have an apex roof as it provides perfect drainage and more room for your chickens. If you go with a flat roof make sure it slopes from the door to the back of the hen house, then everything should be fine. An overhanging roof will provide more protection too.Want to Learn More About Chickens and Chicken Coops?
